Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful nature reserve in Odisha, India, located along the Mahanadi River. It is around 150 kilometers from Bhubaneswar, in a scenic area called the Satkosia Gorge, known for its steep cliffs and dense forests.

The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of animals, including tigers, leopards, elephants, and gharials (a type of crocodile). It’s also a great place for birdwatching. The gharials are often seen resting on the riverbanks.

Visitors can enjoy activities like wildlife safaris, nature walks, birdwatching, and boat rides on the Mahanadi River. The peaceful surroundings also make it a perfect spot for camping and picnicking.

Start your journey early in the morning after a quick breakfast and drive towards Angul, a district with a fascinating history. Angul District, which became a separate administrative unit on April 1, 1993, is named after its headquarters, the town of Angul.

Continue your adventure with a scenic drive for about an hour and a half, taking you to a stunning spot of natural beauty. Arrive at the Tikarpada Forest Lodge, where you can immerse yourself in the breathtaking views of the Mahanadi River. Tikarpada, part of the Satkosia Gorge, is located within the Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Odisha’s premier tourist destinations, covering 795.52 square kilometers. This sanctuary, located about 140 km from Bhubaneswar, is famous for being home to the endangered gharial crocodile. Besides gharials, you may also spot tigers, leopards, elephants, pangolins, spotted deer, rhesus macaques, snakes, and turtles. The sanctuary is surrounded by the majestic Satkosia Gorge, formed by the Mahanadi River. The Gharwale Sanctuary, located here, is a key breeding ground for gharials, and there are conservation efforts in place to protect them.

On the left side of the gorge, you’ll find the Tikarpada Crocodile Sanctuary, known for its lush forests and abundant wildlife. For thrill-seekers, the area offers a variety of adventure activities, including river rafting, trekking, fishing, and boating. After a day of exploration, unwind and spend the night in a cozy Forest Bungalow.

The journey covers a distance of 220 km, taking around 5.5 hours.

 

Tikarpada Sanctuary

The Tikarpada Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Tikarpada village of Angul district, Orissa, is a beautiful place to explore nature. The sanctuary is surrounded by the stunning Satkosia Gorge, a 22 km long gorge created by the Mahanadi River flowing through the hills. It covers an area of 795.52 km² and is home to many animals and plants.

Here, you can spot tigers, leopards, wild cats, and many other animals. You might also see different birds, including the Indian pitta and red jungle fowl, making it a great place for birdwatching. If you're an adventure enthusiast, you can enjoy activities like water rafting, fishing, and wildlife watching. The sanctuary also has a special rescue center that helps protect endangered crocodiles.

Tikarpada- Bhubaneswar

In the early morning, you'll head to Bhubaneswar, a historic city in Odisha (formerly Orissa) in eastern India. Bhubaneswar is famous for its ancient temples made of sandstone, which are scattered around Bindu Sagar Lake in the old part of the city. One of the must-see temples is the 11th-century Lingaraja Temple. Near the Rajarani Temple, you'll find sculptures of guardians representing the 8 cardinal and ordinal directions. The Odisha State Museum is also worth a visit, showcasing fascinating Jain antiques, ancient weapons, and beautiful Pattachitra paintings. You’ll spend half a day exploring the temples, the museum, and caves dating back to the second century A.D. Afterward, you'll be transferred to the airport for your departure.
